I wanted to share a timely article that caught my attention this week, as it speaks directly to how investment advice is delivered in Canada—and why that matters for investors.
A recent report from Investment Executive highlights how Canada’s largest banks came under scrutiny during a Senate hearing:
The key issue raised was the narrowing of investment product shelves at major banks, with regulators expressing concern that this trend may limit access to a broader range of opportunities. In simple terms, this raises an important question:
Are clients always seeing the full universe of options? Or, just what fits within a bank’s internal platform?
Why this matters for investors
Large banks play an important role in the financial system. But, they also operate within vertically integrated structures. This structure can create inherent limitations, even when advisors are acting in good faith.
If you’re working with a bank advisor, your choices are often shaped by:
What the bank manufactures or partners on
What’s approved internally
What fits within their platform
That doesn’t mean the advice is “bad”, but it does mean it can be limited.
And over time, that limitation can put clients at a disadvantage:
Fewer investment options
Less access to niche or best-in-class managers
More likelihood of “one-size-fits-most” solutions
The Independent Advantage
This is where independent firms such as ours offer a fundamentally different model. As independent advisors, we are not tied to a single institution’s product shelf. That means:
Broader access to investment solutions across multiple providers
The ability to evaluate opportunities based on merit, not affiliation
Greater flexibility to adapt portfolios as markets evolve
In other words, independence allows us to focus on fit and outcomes, rather than working within predefined constraints like many of our competitors.
This article is an important reminder that how advice is delivered matters just as much as the advice itself.
And having an advisor who isn’t constrained by a single institution can make a
meaningful difference in the outcomes you see. Having access to a wider opportunity set, combined with objective guidance, can make a meaningful difference over time.
Which is why I left a firm early in my carrier where my access to product for my clients was limited to our proprietary products, and why I continue to be a proud independent Financial Planner.
